School Resource Officer’s Duty Summary  

The School Resource Officers (SRO) supports and facilitates the educational process within the Bellefontaine City Schools (BCS) by providing a safe and secure environment through building and establishing meaningful relationships with students and staff. SRO’s will be proactively interacting with the school community to ensure the enforcement of city and state laws, protection of life and the prevention, detection, or investigation of crime. The SRO’s will proactively educate students, staff, and community on drugs, drug abuse, and drug prevention.  SRO’s will work effectively with students, parents, BCS personnel, and community to support teaching and learning in BCS.

To also include the following duties;

  1. Patrol BCS property for suspicious activity, unauthorized persons on campus, or unauthorized entry before, during, and after hours. Conduct routine patrols of BCS facilities and property. 
  2. Provide in-service training to help administrators, staff, and students be better prepared to deal with emergencies and safety/security issues.
  3. Work with the administration, staff, and students to better understand the role of law enforcement in a school environment.
  4. Proactively communicate with the school’s leadership and collaborate with school’s administration on safety protocols and procedures. 
  5. Provide classroom presentations on crime prevention, concepts, and structure of the law. Assist teaching law related education, substance abuse education, de-escalation techniques, and conflict resolution to students and staff.
  6. Identify and prevent (through counseling and referral) delinquent behavior, including drug and alcohol addiction and abuse.
  7. Serve as liaison between the BCS administration, staff, students, parents, and law enforcement for matters involving the BCS, staff, and students during investigations.
  8. Make arrests ONLY when necessary to protect students, staff and BCS property.
