National Honor Society

nhsThe National Honor Society is an extracurricular club that accepts members based on merit. One must demonstrate excellence in four areas to be considered for membership: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.

Requirements for eligibility: -Junior or Senior in High School
-3.5 GPA or Higher
-At least 12 hours of community service in at least 3 different activities per year (minimum 6 activities) completed prior to beginning of the first semester of your junior year, or 18 hours and nine activities by senior year.

How one becomes a member: In the fall of one’s junior year, the National Honor Society Adviser reviews academic records and sends applications to those who have attained the required 3.5 GPA. The student fills out the application, noting any activities they have participated in that show their leadership and submitting any additional service papers. They also write an essay to express why they feel they are qualified to be a member of National Honor Society based upon the four pillars of the NHS, Service, Character, Leadership and Scholarship. Applications are submitted to a faculty council for review and students who have met all the requirements selected as a new member. Students are notified during the school day, called “Tapping”, a few weeks from the date of application submission and are formally inducted at a later formal evening ceremony.

Items to note on one’s application:
-School extracurricular activities
-Sports teams
-Leadership positions
-Outside activities (4-H, Church, etc.)
