Welcome Letter - BHS 2020-21

Dear Chieftain Nation:

It’s a great day to be a Chief!  Welcome back to the school year 2020-2021!  I can’t tell you how excited we are to get started and get back to school.  We have missed all of our Chiefs! As you know, the start to this year will be very different, so we want to make sure all families have a good idea of what the start of the school year will look like.  Therefore, in our Final Forms communication, we have sent some information on the structure and expectations for this school year.  Please take some time to review the Chieftain Pride Agreements.

Here is a brief summary of what you need to know to get the school year started:

  1. There are 5 platforms that students, staff, and parents need to use on a daily/weekly basis. Please save your passwords for these sites. All of these sites can be accessed from the Bellefontaine City Schools webpage. They include:
    1. Final Forms:Student enrollment, medical, and general information. If you have not completed Final Forms, please access these on our website and complete as soon as possible.
    2. Schoology: This is the platform that students will use to complete schoolwork.
    3. Microsoft Outlook/Office 365 (student email):Students should also use their Microsoft Outlook email addresses as methods for communication. They need this to log on to Schoology and Naviance. Students can sign onto Schoology, Microsoft Outlook, and Naviance (see letter d) all at the same time.
    4. Naviance: Naviance is the new platform for College and Career Readiness that all students will use for career advising, career planning, and college applications. Seniors will start very early in this process. Students will receive Naviance log ins at the beginning of the year. Naviance and Office 365 share the same password. If you are signed into Office 365, you will be signed into Naviance at the same time. This is also part of the Single Sign On process.
    5. Progress Book:This is the platform to access grades, report cards, schedules, and academic requirements.

  2. BHS will start its academic year on a blended learning model. Please refer to the school calendar for the structure of first semester. For students attending in-person schooling, this model will have the following structure:
  1. Students with the last names A-L will attend school in person on the “red” or A schedule two times per week (Tuesday and Thursday).
  2. Students with the last names M-Z will attend school in person on the “black” or B schedule two times per week (Wednesday and Friday).
  3. Monday is a Virtual Day.We will also have special schedules, clubs, and intervention on these days.If students are to attend these days, specific teachers and advisors will let them know.
  4. Please refer to the school calendar for specific dates (included in this information).Families that share a household will attend according to the last name of the oldest child so that all members of the same household will attend in person on the same days.
  5. During the other 3 days per week, students will log on to Schoology during school hours and complete daily assignments. Daily assignments are required and must be completed prior to weekly assessments. Assessments are mastery-based so that teachers can understand the extent of student learning and provide timely feedback.
  6. Teachers will hold office hours and conduct intervention activities on Mondays each week. Students are expected to complete virtual assignments each Monday. Some students may have required intervention hours to attend for teachers.

For students who are 100% remote in their learning, the expectations are as follows:

  1. Students will login to Schoology during school hours on a daily basis.
  2. Students will complete daily assignments. Daily assignments are required and must be completed prior to weekly assessments. Assessments are mastery-based so that teachers can understand the extent of student learning and provide timely feedback.
  3. Students will contact their teachers via email on a weekly basis or as otherwise necessary.
  4. Students will record their daily log in and attendance activities. Attendance is based on hours online, daily assignments completed, and weekly teacher contact.

Finally, we invite you to our “One Stop Shop” as a way to orient students and parents to the new school year.  At this event, students will get school pictures, receive school schedules, purchase Chieftain Pride gear, and log in to platforms for the school year.  The One Stop Shop occurs on Thursday, September 3rd from 3-7 pm (Juniors and Seniors) and Friday, September 4th from 1-5 pm (Freshmen and Sophomores). It starts at the main entrance of the high school.  School schedules will also be released on Progress Book on August 31st.

**Special One Stop Shop note for the Senior Class and the Sophomore Class:  Jostens will be available for our One Stop Shop so that seniors and sophomores can place orders. Please stop by the table to get this process started! The earlier you order, the better! Jostens will also come back on Thursday, September 10th from 5-7 pm in front by the flagpole to take orders for both groups.

I can’t wait to see everyone!  Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions.  Take care and stay safe!

Best,

Dr. Noeth   - Principal
