BGSU Science & Math Education in ACTION


Scholarships are available at BGSU for incoming freshman considering careers in teaching science and/or mathematics. The Ohio Department of Higher Education has awarded Choose Ohio First grant funds to BGSU to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.  Their unique program called Science and Math Education in ACTION offers recipients $4,000 the first year of college with increases each year up to $5,000 the fourth year--a scholarship valued at a total of approximately $20,000 (based on continued state funding).

High school seniors considering teaching either secondary science or math OR middle childhood science and math may be eligible for this scholarship program.

The basic criteria for consideration includes:

  • Ohio resident
  • Incoming freshman fall 2020
  • minimum high school GPA of 3.0*
  • Recommended minimum ACT of 23*
  • Considering a career teaching science and/or mathematics

*Most ACTION scholars are well above these requirements.

DEADLINE TO APPLY: January 15, 2020 

In addition to scholarship funds, the ACTION program offers unique opportunities for students such as a three-week Summer Bridge program to prepare incoming freshman for college, personal interactions with the faculty, involvement with science or math research projects, classroom research experience and internships with community members who us science and/or math in their careers.
