AAA School Safety Patrol--$1,000 Grant

The AAA School Safety Patrol program has been protecting children going to and from school since 1920.  Millions of young people across the United States and 30 other nations worldwide volunteer their time each day to help ensure the safety of their peers.

AAA Ohio Auto Club helps former School Safety Patrol members further their education after graduation through the AAA School Safety Patrol $1,000 Grant Program.  Each year the $1,000 grants are presented to high school seniors who once participated in the AAA School Safety Patrol program.  To date, more than 265 high school seniors who have been awarded over $250,000 since the program started in 1987.

Who Can Apply
Students from the following counties are eligible to apply: Allen, Auglaize, Belmont, Butler, Carroll, Coshocton, Crawford, Delaware, Erie, Fairfield, Franklin, Guernsey, Hardin, Harrison, Holmes, Knox, Licking, Logan, Madison, Marion, Medina, Mercer, Monroe, Morgan, Morrow, Muskingum, Perry, Pickaway, Putnam, Richland, Sandusky, Seneca, Stark, Union, Van Wert, Wayne, Wyandot, and the City of Barberton.

How To Apply
To apply, students must complete the application found here.  Additional information is encouraged and may be attached to the application for.  Students are also required to write a 500-word essay, submit official school transcripts, and provide at least on written letter of recommendation.  The essay question and requirements can be found below.  

Essay Requirements
A 500-word (minimum) essay is required addressing the following:

  • Describe how being a member of the AAA School Safety Patrol has influenced you.  What did you learn from this experience?

Make sure to touch on the following topics in your essay:

  • Describe a specific experience from the patrol that influenced you.  What did you learn from this experience?
  • What values did the AAA School Safety Patrol teach you as a young elementary student?
  • What advice would you give to current AAA School Safety Patrollers and why?

Be sure to include personal experiences and specific examples in your response.  Spelling and neatness are considered.  All essays must be typed and double-spaced.

Once all applications have been reviewed finalists will be chosen for a phone interview with members of AAA Ohio's Auto Club Traffic Safety Department, who will make the final decision.  Recipients of the grants are chosen based on their academic performance, school and community service, the essay and the interview.  Finalists who are interviewed but not awarded the $1,000 grant will receive a $250 grant.

Applications must be submitted and postmarked no later than Friday, Feb. 26, 2021.  No application will be accepted without  the signature of the guidance counselor or other school official and the applicant.
