Good evening, Chieftain Nation -- In an effort to keep you updated on the weekly schedules prior to the close of school, I will be sending regular updates to our staff and our families.  Please check your news, email, and the district Facebook page so you can stay updated on our current events.  The topics for today's update include: graduation, senior activities (and senior orders), locker collection, and grading. Here is the latest news:

  1. Graduation:  I am very excited to announce an exciting format to celebrate our Commencement Activities.  Probably like many of you, I have been very disappointed at many of the cancellations and closures this spring. But, after working through this graduation plan with our staff, I am hopeful and excited. Many thanks to our staff and community for input on this unique ceremony.  Today, we are focused on what we have and not on what we have not. What we have will be a unique, family-inclusive ceremony -- one like no other class has ever had. Two of the most important things for our seniors are: walking across the stage and having a selected BCS staff member read their names at graduation.  Our ceremony will include both (and more!).  Here are some dates and notes to know as we head toward our Commencement Activities:
    1. Format:  We are working with a videographer (Blue Skies Communications) to put together our Commencement Package.  They will be at the high school filming the various pieces of our ceremony on May 15th.  Please mark that date!  On that day, seniors will bring their families on a prior-released schedule and will walk across the stage in the auditorium WITH YOUR FAMILIES one-by-one. The vidoegrapher will film each walk and put it all together for a VIRTUAL FACEBOOK WATCH PARTY at 7 pm on May 22nd, the original date of graduation. Details will be coming with specific directions for May 15th..  We will also be filming the choir, national anthem, val/sal speeches, etc. on May 15th. Stay tuned for the exact schedule and more instructions for that day.  Seniors, please bring your families to enjoy this moment with you.
    2. Readers:  Staff members selected to read names will also need to pay attention to student times for May 15th so they can read students' names at the podium in the auditorium.
    3. Expectations:  The walk will be organized and flow through each senior in an efficient manner.  We do want families to be there with seniors.  However, once the walk is complete, and seniors have their photograph taken in the atrium, we ask that families exit the BHS facility and return home in order to comply with appropriate social distancing practices. Families will likely only be on campus for 5-10 minutes if the flow goes as we expect.  Seniors need to have caps, gowns, and tassels.  Families will also be on camera that day on stage. More details to follow.
    4. Parade:  Yes, everyone loves a parade! We are working on a car parade (proposed for 5:30 pm on May 22nd).  We will release details if approved, as we must follow social distancing and appropriate guidelines. Stay tuned!
    5. Diplomas:  We will have a schedule for the pickup of diplomas during the week of May 25-29. Seniors must have fees paid and requirements completed to collect diplomas.
    6. Fees and returns:  Seniors, please take some time to take care of fees, books, and other loose ends so that we can release your diploma.
    7. Grades:  Senior grades will be completed May 12th. Seniors should have all work completed by May 8th to ensure graduation. Please note:  CCP/AP classes may be on a slightly different schedule.  Please check with your teacher for your course timeline.
  2. Locker Clean Out:  Locker clean out will take place next week on Monday , May 4th  (Seniors and Sophomores) and Thursday, May 7th (Juniors and Freshmen) from 10 am to 12 pm each day. Sophomores and Juniors will enter the school at the atrium entrance. Seniors and Freshmen will enter at the student doors.  Only 10 students will be allowed in the building at a time. We are requesting that students wear a mask and have gloves if possible. The building will be sanitized before, during, and after pick up.  We will have tables at the end of the hallways for students who wish to turn in books. We will have a later book collection in May, as well, as many students are still using books to complete work.
  3. Fees and Paper Drop Off:  Students can pay fees on Tuesdays from 12-3 pm in the main office and Wednesdays from 8 am - 12 noon in the cafe. Paper drop-off will be on Wednesdays from 8 am to 12 pm and 4 pm - 6 pm.
  4. Grading: Ohio’s stay-at-home order affected Bellefontaine High School’s final six-week grading period tremendously. All instruction and student learning is taking place remotely in the last six weeks. However, at the end of this grading period, teachers will provide a final grade on the report card. Throughout this shortened six-week period, teachers are gathering evidence of student learning. Feedback, reflection and assessment will be part of what will determine a student’s final six-week grade. Please note, no student will receive a lower performance level or grade than they did in the their cumulative grade through the 5th six week grading period (year-to-date grade or YTD). We will ensure that their performance for a majority of the year is reflected accurately in their grades. Again, please note that CCP and AP courses may have altered schedules, impacted by college requirements.  Please check with your teacher for your course's specific grading plan.

Thank you, Chieftain Nation, for working together while apart. We are working hard to make sure the end of the school year is a positive one, and focusing on what we have and not on what we have not.  If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.  Have a great week. It's always a great day to be a Chieftain!  Dr. Noeth
